MARQUETTE -- The Marquette Maritime Museum has been making local history come alive since 1980. But the museum has seen some major changes in recent years that you may not be aware of, and that's what makes it Tuesday's FOX UP Hidden Treasure.
With 17 exhibits detailing history back to the 1850s, the Maritime Museum has so much to explore.
The museum is famous for its real lighthouse light displays and Marquette lighthouse tours.
Nearly 90 percent of guests visiting the Maritime Museum are out of towners, and museum officials say they'd like to see more locals in their galleries. They're hoping the museum's new ore dock exhibit, which explains how they operate and their importance to our area, might bring more local residents in.
"Marquette would probably not have been founded if it wasn't for the mining; they needed a way to get the ore out to the cities, so Marquette became that port. Marquette was founded as a port community, and it is basically the history of our area," says Museum Director Carrie Fries.
You can check out the ore dock exhibit and the rest of the museum daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
