Vote for your favorite U.P. wings
MARQUETTE -- The nominations are in for FOX UP's Top Choice for Buffalo wings, and they are as follows:
- Buffalo Wild Wings in Marquette Township
- The Doghouse in Marquette
- Vango's in Marquette
- The Downtowner in Houghton
- And The Delta Pub in Gladstone.
We'll be featuring each of the top five on our show this week.
The first wings place we visited was Vango's on Third Street in Marquette. They have a variety of things on their menu, everything from chicken sandwiches to Greek salads. But their wings stand out to customers as being among the best they've ever tasted.
Vango's may not have the variety of sauces that other wings places do, but they don't need it. The flavor is cooked right in to the meat. Vango's wings are pre-marinated with spices and are actually injected with hot sauce.
They're then fried for about six minutes to give them that extra crisp. The wings are served with celery and dipping sauce. This may sound standard, but Vango's has a special recipe they use to make their famous homemade blue cheese and ranch dressing.
Although Vango's owner Michele Butler wouldn't tell me the ingredient to their secret sauces, she did tell me what the secret is to the success of their wings...it's quality, and customers can taste it.
"Vango's has been around for 50 years now. Our senior partner, Clark Lambros, came from Greece and he always taught us that there are no shortcuts to great cooking. That's why our food is always fresh, always quality," says Butler.
One Vango's wings lover, David Harris, says that their wings are "snappy, right when you bite them they're excellent and they're not too hot, they're just right."
Stay tuned all week long. My next stop will be the Doghouse, also in Marquette, Tuesday.
