CALUMET -- The Houghton Keweenaw County Genealogical Society is asking for help from the community in gathering more information about the Italian Hall disaster of 1913.

The Italian Hall "fire" disaster claimed the lives of over 70 people during the copper strike of 1913. The society wants to collect information from people with family members who died in the incident or experienced it. Any pictures or stories that anyone has will be used in a summer exhibit for the 100th anniversary of the strike.

The society says the reasoning behind the exhibit is to bring attention to all aspects of the area's history.

"There were 73, 74 people that died in this tragedy, and they are all in a mass grave, and it's unmarked," said Avis West, HKCGS President. "We don't want those people forgotten."

If you have information for the HKCGS, you can email them at HKCGSociety@gmail.com.
