NEWBERRY -- One of the first sled dog races of the season is coming up Saturday, January 5, in the Newberry Area.

Organizers of the Tahquamenon Country Sled Dog Race say they already have more snow than last year, when there was very little.

The race is at the Muskallonge Lake State Park near Newberry.  The mid-distance event had been held the past 13 years at Rainbow Lodge.  The lodge and much of a trail system, however, were destroyed last year by a wildfire in Northern Luce County.

The race features 12-dog and 8-dog teams running 60-mile and 40-mile distances.
