The low pressure system that has us expecting all this snow is taking its sweet time getting here. Around noon, it was centered over southern Minnesota (Track its movement here from the Hydrometeorological Prediction Center). Since much of the snow began on Saturday, this system dumped more than 8" in South Dakota and North Dakota, and more than 7" in Minnesota where it is still snowing. There's less than an inch on the ground in Negaunee and the NWS is reporting nearly 19" belowe average for this time of year. Our ski hills need that snow!
The National Weather Service has issued Blizzard Warnings for much of South Dakota and Minnesota as well as numerous Winter Storm Warnings in surrounding areas. Locally speaking, TV6 and FOX UP's entire viewing area is under a Winter Weather Advisory. Different counties' advisories expire at different times on Monday.
This system has consistently arrived later than expected so now the heaviest snow times for the UP are likely later in the afternoon and evening. It will track into Wisconsin so the southern and western UP will receive the most snow. It still looks like all of the UP will see 2" to 3" miminum through Sunday and Sunday night. The western UP will likely see some lake enhanced snow so they may see up to 6" on Sunday, especially in higher terrain. Highs will be in the low to mid 30s.
Snow continues Sunday night, but will diminish for most of the UP as the system continues eastward. As northwest winds pick up behind the system, snow will transition entirely into lake effect overnight into Monday. Lows will fall into the 20s.
For those traveling to and from the Packers game, drive safely. The roads will likely be worse on the way back home.
On Monday, lake effect snow will add 1" to 3" more for the northwestern UP, again especially in higher terrains. Other counties along Lake Superior may see another 1". As a weak high pressure ridge moves in to our north, lake effect snow will clear away steadily throughout the day and end by afternoon to early evening. Highs will be in the mid to upper 20s.
On Monday night, skies will be mostly cloudy and there shouldn't be any more lake effect snow, but there may be a few light snow showers with a weak low pressure system that could also bring a few more snow showers on Tuesday. Monday's lows will be colder in the 20s, but also the 10s inland.
The rest of the week will be relatively seasonable for temperatures with a chance for snow each day through the weekend. The weekend itself is looking potentially snowy on Sunday.
