So the Groundhog is predicting an early spring. My forecast sort of matches that. Well, at least for the next week or so. Warmer temperatures by Wednesday are likely.
For Sunday, highs will still be well below average for the western half of the UP, mainly 10 degrees or colder. The eastern half, however, should be in the 10s. An all around brisk northwest wind will add some wind chill to both halves. A few light snow showers are possible early with a weak area of low pressure, but accumulations will be minimal.
The real snow comes in the late afternoon and evening behind the system when that wind kicks up some lake effect snow showers for the northwest wind snow belts. There could be several inches of accumulation on Sunday, heavier east of Munising where snow totals could exceed 12" by Monday morning. The National Weather Service has issued Lake Effect Warnings and Advisories for those areas.
Sunday's lows will be cold with most of the UP below zero, especially inland. Snow will continue into Monday. Monday's highs will also be around 10 degrees. Monday night will not be as cold as Sunday night as winds shift out of the southwest and lake effect snow tapers off.
Tuesday will be the start of a warming trend with highs in the 10s. Wednesday will be in the 20s and Thursday and Friday may approach 30 and higher. Tuesday and Thursday may see a low pressure system with some widespread snow with lake effect snow in between each system.
