NEGAUNEE -- Michigan schools will expand their kindergarten hours starting in this fall.
The state mandate will eliminate half-days and part-time classes.
Last summer, Governor Rick Snyder signed a bill to make all Michigan schools hold full day sessions, every day, starting in September.
That means adding two more teachers at Lakeview Elementary in Negaunee at a cost of 150,000 dollars. But if they do not go to full six hour days, they will lose a half a million dollars in state funding.
"If we're going to lose half the funding for those students that's a huge hit financially for us, so budgetwise it makes more sense all day every day," said Superintendent Jim Derocher.
The new class hours at Lakeview will be from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. rather than 9:00 a.m. till noon.
