The Salvation Army is looking to raise $100,000 this year

MARQUETTE -- When you hear the bells ringing, you know it's that time of the year:  the giving season.

For the Salvation Army, they do that all year long, but during the colder months, they're putting in the extra effort. And they're asking you to do the same.

"We're trying to ask everyone to dig a little deeper this year. You know, you make that dollar, maybe you could turn it into a two dollar gift, and so on," said Salvation Army Captain Joel Arthur.

And this year, the Salvation Army in Marquette is setting serious goals for this season.

This Christmas season, the Salvation Army is looking to give back more than they ever have. Their goal is $100,000. Last year, their goal was $85,000, but they came up short by about $2,000.

They're not stopping there. Along with the kettle bells, they're continuing their daily lunch service during their busiest time of the year--a program that fed 24,000 meals last year. And they're partnering up with the Mining Journal, just as they do every year, for the 34th annual "Cheer Club," an effort to give presents to children in need.

"We've had a lot of generosity from the community over the years. Whenever we ask for help, they seem to come out and they open their hearts and their wallets. So we get an awful lot of money and a lot of support," said Mining Journal General Manager and Publisher, Jim Reevs.
