GLADSTONE -- The concoction being created in this home shop are scent memories: candles.

“I think each candle brings a memory to everybody,” says Jenner Levely, candlemaker and owner of Flat Rock Candle Company. “I'll get people who buy the lily of the valley and they'll say, ‘Your candle reminds me of my grandmother's lily of the valleys that were growing out over the farmhouse, and I remember that as a childhood memory.’”

Levely has turned her passion into a business. And the target audience? It’s women in their mid-20s to late 40s.

But not all customers fit the mold.

“Surprisingly, I get a lot of husbands who like to buy for camp or who like to buy it for the holidays. They’ll come in and they'll buy their mancave-type scents," Levely explains.

There are over 40 scents to choose from.

"Candle making is an eight-step process that takes about two days. Packaging and labeling is the last step, and 12 tea lights can fit into a box right here. Many of these hand-crafted candles will be shipped throughout the U.S," Levely says.

But can a tough economy ever extinguish the flame of candle making?

The candle maker says, "No."  She said that regardless of how much gas is, people still need to celebrate occasions, and candles are a great way to do just that.
