MARQUETTE -- Four panels of the AIDS Memorial Quilt are on display at Northern Michigan University. The quilt started in 1987 and features the names of more than 90,000 people who have passed away due to the AIDS pandemic. The Latino Student Union worked to get the panels so NMU students can participate in aids awareness week.
"It's really nice that we can promote awareness, education and not just that, but it's important to remember and pay respect to those that have lost their lives because of HIV/AIDS. It's horrible and it affects all of us," said Natalie Avila of the Latino Student Union. "It's nice to just take a moment and look at these quilts that were made by friends and family in honor of these people."
The quilt panels will be on display in the Hedgcock building through Friday. More events are planned including an AIDS quiz bowl and confidential HIV testing.
