MARQUETTE -- A growing program in the Marquette School District is getting extra financial support after its leader received honors.

Orchestra Director Janis Peterson was recently given the Michigan Youth Arts Touchstone Award, honoring her excellence in arts education. The award is sponsored statewide by Meemic Insurance.

Peterson also received $250 that will go toward the expanding fifth grade after school strings program at Bothwell Middle School.

Meemic agent Dwight Johnson says Peterson was honored for both her accomplishments teaching strings and being a strong advocate for the fine arts.

"Knowing Jan Peterson for all these years, she has more fun teaching school than she does receiving awards, and that's why she deserves the award," said Johnson.

Peterson has taught in the Marquette Area Public School District for over 30 years.
