The program assists youth and adults
ESCANABA -- The YMCA of Delta County provides youth and adults with many activities and programs at their facility. They're especially committed to providing these participation opportunities regardless of one's ability to pay.
Their 2012 Strong Kids Campaign is here, and they've set a goal of $105,000. The campaign assists area youth.
In fact, 54 children are served each week in child care programs. They also offer financial assistance to people of any age.
“If it weren't for the recipient scholarship program,” explains Jerry Shultz of Escanaba. “We wouldn't be able to use the Y because finances wouldn't allow it. But my wife, it helps her health a lot. It’s her means of getting exercise."
Volunteers will campaign and ask people for pledges. So what does the money go towards?
The YMCA has over 2,800 members and 65 percent are made up of youth and their family members. Some of the money raised during the campaign helps fund summer camp experiences and swim lessons for the kids.
Being a part of the campaign is especially meaningful for the organizers. Even they take part in the activities offered by the Y.
“I actually just joined the Y last year with my kids,” said Mike Dagenais, Co-chair of the Strong Kids Campaign. “I enjoy coming here myself."
Those hoping to be recipients of the campaign can simply fill out a scholarship application.
“We're trying to promote healthy living-type lifestyles,” explains Mary Gauthier, HR Fund Development Coordinator. “But also, at the same time, we're trying to get these people involved and make them feel good about themselves."
Last year, 775 youth and families received assistance through the campaign.
This year's campaign runs through late March.
