The annual Turkey Trot is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the MSHS group

MARQUETTE -- Hundreds of runners and walkers were up early on Thursday morning for the annual Turkey Trot at Marquette Senior High School.

The event is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the school's orchestra program. The money will go toward festivals, trips, and new music.

Racers left from the school and headed north along the bike path toward Presque Isle. They ran or walked the five and ten-kilometer courses.

Some enjoyed a walk with their dog while others caught up with old friends in town for the holiday.

"This has grown over the years tremendously," said MSHS orchestra member Alexander Shahbazi. "It's amazing, it's Thanksgiving morning... for people to come out here and give money to the orchestra and just enjoy their morning and maybe burn off a few calories before their turkey dinner."

Several of the participants in the race also donated items for the TV6 Canathon. T-shirts sold at the event benefited the school's Business Professionals of America organization.
