ESCANABA -- Soo Hill Elementary students met the first American to travel solo by sled dog team across 2,500 miles of arctic America.

Pam Flowers was the presenter at the school assembly. Her mission was to retrace the route of a Danish expedition from the 1920s. Flowers journeyed from Alaska to Repulse Bay in Canada with the help of her eight-dog team.

The students hung on to her stories about being marooned because of melting sea ice, and having to stay with an Inuit family for almost six months.

"I've never actually seen dog sledding before, but I'm really excited to hear the rest of the story because we left off at a really good part and I wanted to hear it," said third grader Erika Silverstone.

Flowers also visited other Escanaba schools to share her exciting adventures.
