ISHPEMING -- The city of Ishpeming has taken on the issue of aggressive dogs with a new ordinance. Wednesday the city adopted the ordinance that helps police and city officials identify and deal with aggressive dogs.
Dogs that menace, chase, threaten or bite other animals or people three times within a six month period are listed as dangerous dogs. Violations of the ordinance are considered civil infractions.
"Basically we're trying to get owners of dogs, those dogs that have the potential to be aggressive, to take care of the dogs and make sure that they're not going to be getting loose, attacking other animals or attacking people," said Ishpeming Police Chief Dan Willey.
The first violation of the ordinance results in a $300 fine, the second $500. If problems with the dog persist the animal may be euthanized.
