ESCANABA -- A competition at Bay College in Escanaba had high schoolers putting on their practical thinking caps on Friday.

Students from across the Upper Peninsula met to compete in various skill categories to show off the best they had to offer.

Categories ranged from automotive to welding, and gave students the chance to compete against each other for scholarship prizes. Bay College awarded five students each with a $1,000 scholarship for placing highest overall. Some of the students said that they were a little nervous for the competition.

"I'm only doing the electrical unit," said competitor Sara Larson. "There are other kids doing other units. I just wanted to really try it this year and I'm hoping in senior year I'll be better at it."

The students were judged on the work they completed, but they also had instructors available to help them out. Competitors that place high enough can qualify to compete in a statewide competition in Lansing in the spring.
