MARQUETTE -- As a part of Governor Rick Snyder's plan to hire 41 additional conservation officers as well as improve the fish and game habitat, Snyder is proposing an increase on hunting and fishing license fees.

On Friday the Department of Natural Resources Director Keith Creagh was in Marquette to meet with community members. He said the Governor's proposed budget would mean more money for the DNR.

When it comes to the fishing and hunting license fees, Creagh says the current license structure which includes 227 different licenses will be simplified to 31.

"For fishing, basically there's one license," said Creagh. "It's $25 to go fish and then for hunting we actually reduced the small game license fees from $15 to $10. We call that a base license. You can shoot ducks, migratory birds, upland game species and then on top of that, well then it's additive in nature."

According to DNR officials, if the Governor's 2013/2014 budget is approved by the legislature, the higher license fees would be the first big increase since 1997.
