HOUGHTON -- Saturday afternoon, residents in Houghton sat through a PowerPoint presentation about protecting Michigan's wolves.

Organizers from Keep Michigan Wolves Protected are speaking to residents across the Upper Peninsula about halting the hunt on wolves.

The once-protected predators were put back on the game species list, and it’s up to the DNR to decide if, and when, there will be a hunt.

The group aims to collect approximately 161,000 signatures to put the topic on a referendum ballot in 2014 to be voted.

"It will allow all the registered voters to vote on this issue in 2014," says Adam Robarge, Upper Peninsula coordinator of Keep Michigan Wolves Protected. "Eradicating parts of their population at a random process is something to be taken not lightly. I think we should allow ourselves to amass as much knowledge and information as possible before we make these decisions."

The group will need to gather all the signatures in 90 days for it to be placed on the ballot.
