MARQUETTE -- The Northern Michigan University athletic department is hosting the Pink Wave on Saturday, February 9 at the Berry Events Center. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the three Wildcat sporting events to support breast cancer awareness.

The day tips off with the men's basketball game at 11 a.m. followed by the women's basketball game at 1 p.m. Hockey wraps up the day at 7:35 p.m. All three games are against Ferris State University.

Pink Wave apparel is available to purchase and all net proceeds of the shirt sales will be donated to Cancer Care of Marquette County. Apparel can be purchased at the NMU Bookstore, 'Cats Corner Store, PEIF Info Center.

"The neat thing about this event is it's student led," said NMU Athletic Director Forrest Karr. "We had a couple student athletes come in, they had family members that had experience going through cancer treatment. They wanted to do something to raise awareness and raise money."

Karr noted that NMU used to hold a similar event, but after Marquette General Hospital became a for-profit organization, they had to choose a new partner. Cancer Care of Marquette County is an all-volunteer organization that provides patient services to low-income, un-insured and under-insured cancer patients.

The NMU Bookstore concessions booth at hockey games and the Pink Wave tables at all games, on the upper concourse of the Berry Events Center, will have shirts available. Prices are $10 for a t-shirt, $15 for a crew neck sweatshirt, $20 for a hooded sweatshirt and $40 for a polo.
