ISHPEMING -- Special Olympics teams from all across the U.P. competed in the eighth annual Ishpeming Invitational Basketball Tournament Saturday held at Ishpeming High School.

The event is organized by Special Olympics Area 36. Thirteen teams competed this year. Each team consisted of six to twelve members, ages eight and up. The tournament serves to bring athletes together socially and in friendly competition, and it provides the basis for assigning teams in the state regional tournament in Escanaba.

Organizers say that the tournament went perfectly.

"Well, I think there's a little humor in this because we've run a tournament today that's been seamless, except for running out of toilet paper in the women's bathroom," said Robert Marietti, Tournament Director.

Teams traveled from as far as Ironwood and Sault Ste. Marie to compete.
