MARQUETTE -- Race season kicked off with a slew of activities during last weekend's Noquemanon Ski Marathon, but that's just the tip of the iceberg as the UP 200 and Midnight Run are just around the corner.

Every year organizers get a strong support base from students at Northern Michigan University, but they can only do so much. Volunteers are needed both inside and outdoors for things like crowd control, vet checks, and monitoring road crossings for mushers and their dogs.

Those who decide to help out don't need to worry about missing the race either.

"Some of our volunteers see the start as spectators on Friday evening downtown, and there is plenty of time for them to jump in their vehicle and drive out to Chatham or over to Wetmore and help out at those check points," said UP 200 and Midnight Run volunteer coordinator, Anna Sanford.

Volunteer warmth is being taken into consideration as well, as shifts will run between two and four hours depending on how low the needle dips.

If you are interested in helping out, visit the UP 200 volunteer website here.
