The Lake Superior Youth Theatre brings to life Disney's musical The Little Mermaid

MARQUETTE -- It's a voyage under water into the Mer world. Where King Triton rules the seas. His youngest daughter, Ariel, ends up on an adventure that changes her life. The Little Mermaid Junior is a rendition from the original Broadway production that has been retired.

"She's very adventurous and she's a good person. Her curiosity leads her to want to learn more about the human world," said Jill Vermeulen.

Expect to see all of Ariel's underwater friends, like Sebastian, Scuttle, and Flounder who join her adventures. Her curiosity leads to the meeting of Prince Eric and saving him after a shipwreck.

"He's very dynamic. He likes to take control when he's on the sea, but then when he's in the palace, he has a different side to him. He is a little more shy, but still open to everybody. I would say he is a newer Prince Eric than what you see in cartoons," said Ethan Bott.

A crew of 83 cast members from the age of 8 to 18 and more than 50 on the artistic staff bring this beloved classic to life. However, to transform the stage into an underwater world is a challenge.

They use multiple elements to make it happen. All of the sea creatures will be portrayed by cast members, but the use of props will aid with special effects.

"Working with movement of the actors, working with fabric to emulate that they are indeed underwater or a shore. So it has been very challenging, but like I said, many hours of great artistic staff working on it," said Nikke Nason, Show Director.

The crew has been preparing for months for this three show performance happening this weekend. You can see them January 25 and 26 at the Kaufman Auditorium in Marquette.
