MARQUETTE -- In Marquette Sunday afternoon, dozens of young boys competed in an annual basketball tournament. Four teams of sixth graders played against each other at Marquette Senior High School (MSHS).

The MSHS girls basketball team hosts the event, and team members help keep score or referee.

The tournament is normally held in May, but the coaches decided to move the date. Teams from Marquette, Negaunee, and Baraga competed this year.

One of the main purposes of the tournament is to help younger players gain experience so that they are more prepared for high school athletics.

"You can't start them early enough. If they enjoy the game, let them get playing. The more experience they have coming in to high school, the easier it is for us," said Coach Paul Seibert.

Coaches say that the more experience students have already, the more time they can spend practicing basketball fundamentals.
