Power outages in eastern Upper Peninsula

Cloverland Electric Cooperative line crews responded to a downed transmission line early Sunday morning. The power outage affected the City of St. Ignace, Mackinac Island, the Gros Cap area and Moran Township.

The outage happened at 2:15 a.m. when a line connector failed causing the high-voltage transmission line to burn down near the cooperative’s St. Ignace substation. Wind and weather were also factors. The downed line caused the breakers in the substation to go offline. Approximately 2,000 homes and businesses were affected.

Crews worked through the night to restore power. Power was restored to the majority of affected services by 7:45 a.m. Approximately, 100 services in the Gros Cap area remained without power until 10 a.m. when crews were able to make repairs to the line serving that area.

The transmission line is owned by the Wisconsin-based American Transmission Company.
