MARQUETTE -- Saturday was the opening ceremony for Marquette's 26th Annual Special Olympics. The event was at the Northern Michigan University (NMU) Superior Dome.

Saturday morning, all of the athletes walked in the Parade of Athletes and the torch was officially lit.

NMU student athletes were there to assist and cheer on the Olympians.

"She's four years old and she has down syndrome, and it's just been very meaningful for us to come every year and to support the athletes who are up there doing their best and competing in the event. It's very inspirational," said Cathy Dehlin, spectator.

Approximately 140 athletes from across the Upper Peninsula came and competed.
