MARQUETTE -- The Northern Michigan University student charged in an accidental shooting of a woman has taken a plea deal.
Twenty-one-year-old Nicholas Ireland has entered a no contest plea in Marquette County District Court.
According to police, Ireland shot a 21-year-old woman in the knee last December at a house on Fisher Street in Marquette. The woman, a student on the NMU swim team, was treated at a hospital.
Authorities say alcohol was a factor in the shooting. Ireland is being charged with possession of a firearm while under the influence. The charge of careless discharge of a firearm causing injury was dismissed.
Ireland will be sentenced February 19.
