MARQUETTE -- An increased demand for natural, locally grown food has lead to the creation of the Central U.P. Food Exchange. Natasha Lantz of the Marquette Food Co-op gave a presentation to city commissioners at Monday's meeting.

She outlined the project that aims to build a local food system that will store and distribute local farmers' products. After meeting with businesses in Marquette, Lantz says this could help farmers and consumers.

"The idea is people would sell within their regions to start with, and once a distribution system could be put in place, people, meaning farmers, would sell between the different hubs, and businesses all over the U.P. could purchase from farmers," said Lantz.

The project will take 15 months to complete, and plans for expansion are already in place. The Food Exchange will create hubs in the Central, Eastern and Western U.P.

In other business, the city commission approved a five percent raise for City Manager Bill Vajda.
