Latest news, weather, high school sports for Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

PORTAGE TOWNSHIP -- In light of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut in December, one school is taking extra precautions.

The Portage Township School District is taking more proactive measures in both their elementary school and the middle school and high school.
    
The school district has many safety measures that have been implemented in recent years.  One of the biggest things the district is doing in light of Sandy Hook is making sure most of those procedures are kept quiet.

"Society today seems to be very intune to what's happening, and we just want to make sure that we are able to do everything that we can do in a safe manner and that we can be discreet about it," said Portage Township Schools' Superintendent, Doreen Klingbeil.

Klingbeil says the district is keeping awareness of these kinds of situations high on their priorities.  She says heightened awareness of the school staff will help in keeping students safe.
