MARQUETTE -- The ball drop in Marquette had police patrols out in full force Monday night. About eight patrolmen were in the downtown area during the New Year's Eve festivities. City police made only two arrests during the New Year's celebration. They were enforcing the "no alcohol policy" aimed at keeping the ball drop a family-friendly event. According to police, this year's ball drop was about what they expected.
"All in all, it was a good experience in the downtown area. We had the typical intoxicated people, fighting, that kind of stuff, but nothing out of the ordinary. Overall it was a good night," said Sgt. Ryan Grimm of the Marquette City Police.
City police also say they made no drunk driving arrests on New Year's Eve but say state police did make one on Front Street. Patrols started at around 10 p.m. Monday night, and officers were in the downtown area until about 4 a.m.
