MARQUETTE -- There are more than 6,200 designated snowmobile trails throughout the state of Michigan, and now it's easier than ever to follow your route while riding.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has made their snowmobile maps accessible and downloadable right onto your GPS.

The idea came after requests from several riders who used the existing maps that are available at DNR offices and online.

The new tool gives snowmobilers better guidance when they hit the trails this winter.

"I think that's especially handy in times when you have low visibility, whiteout conditions. People have a GPS right in front of them, they pretty much know where the trail is going to go," said Ron Yesney of the Michigan DNR.

The maps are available on the DNR web site, from there, you can download specific GPS files by area.
