ESCANABA -- Officials in the U.P. talked Monday about how they've prepared for a school shooting crisis like the one in Newtown, Connecticut.

Planning started in 2004 to establish a safe schools plan for the Upper Peninsula through grant funding.  By 2008 local law enforcement and school teachers began to receive specialized training to deal with a crisis situation.

"But as far as response, I think our teachers, our education and our law enforcement are doing the right thing, are monitoring the right training.  They're doing a good job practicing in the right mode," said Delta County Emergency Manager, Bob Berbohm.

Officials want to remind everyone to report to law enforcement any activity around schools that seems out of the ordinary.
