IRON MOUNTAIN -- Iron Mountain's downtown area has been nominated to the National Register of Historic Places.
The State Historic Preservation Office initiated the nomination which will take place in Lansing at the end of January. The nominated area includes the Carnegie Public Library, Iron Mountain High School, Central Middle School, six churches and the Bishop Baraga School.
"I really feel that historic preservation is what gives each community a unique identity and each building, each aspect of a community, it's important that we protect and preserve those. It helps you stand out," said Main Street manager, Jonathan Ringel.
Ringel added that this nomination will be good for marketing, promotion and tourism of the downtown area. It will also allow property owners to be eligible for tax credits next year.
