WAKEFIELD -- A registered sex offender from Wakefield has been taken into custody after being found in a school zone.

According to the Michigan State Police, their investigation started when they were contacted on November 20. They were told that a male subject had been seen rummaging through trash dumpsters located on the Wakefield/Marenisco school campus.

They found that the 64-year-old suspect was digging through the dumpsters on a weekly basis, allegedly looking for clothing and notes from the students. They also found that he is a registered sex offender.

Troopers obtained an arrest warrant for the subject on Wednesday, and he was then arrested without incident. He is charged with a one year misdemeanor for being a registered sex offender loitering within a student safety zone.

This subject was lodged at the Gogebic County Jail. Bond was set at $1,000 cash. A subsequent conviction is a two-year felony and carries a fine of $2,000.
