Tobacco companies must publicly admit to deceiving Americans for decades about the dangers of smoking. A federal judge made that ruling today in one of the last legal steps settling liability in the government prosecution of cigarette makers.

The ruling requires tobacco companies to place messages in advertisements and package warnings about the dangers of smoking and that Americans were, "deliberately deceived." One says "Smoking is highly addictive. Nicotine is the addictive drug in tobacco" and another in part reads, "Smoking kills, on average, 1,200 Americans. Everyday."

The judge ordered the tougher warning labels six years ago, but the case was tied up in court over the wording of the labels. It's not clear if the tobacco companies will appeal the judge's decision.
