MARQUETTE -- They are made in all different types of patterns, colors, and sizes, and they are hanging on display in the Great Lakes room at NMU for the Autumn Comforts Quilt Show.

"We feature antique quilts, and we also feature artistic quilts. We have quite the selection of original design quilts, so we have something for everyone," said Judy Parlato with Marquette's Quilter Guild.

There were 20 quilters showcasing more than 250 quilts. For most, the art of quilting is a tradition that is passed down in their families. Many have been quilting for decades, but all agree it's the beauty of the finished product that gets them hooked.

"I love the colors, I love the patterns that I've seen that's seemingly very simple that can be very exciting to look at. I don't ever buy patterns. I don't think I've ever bought a pattern, so I always start from scratch and doing something that's me," said Katherine Peters, quilter.

It's a labor of love as it can take hours, days, weeks, months, and sometimes years to complete a quilt. It depends on how detailed the quilter is making it.

"It's a very lengthy time, but then you go back to short-term things like something that would go on your table that might take you two to three days, and that kind of rescues you from the long-term things," said Rosemary Glenn, quilter.

Since it takes so much time and detail to make a quilt, officials say it's hard to even put a dollar amount on how much it would cost

The showcase runs until Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
