MANISTIQUE -- Schoolcraft County Sheriff, Grant Garris, had high hopes of serving another four years in office, but he was defeated by Democrat John Norrington during Tuesday's election.

Harris' term will be finished December 31. He says some challenges are ongoing, like the increase in drug abuse, and between 95 to 100 percent of current inmates are there because of drug-related crimes.

Harris says the greatest highlight of his career was the privilege to help protect Schoolcraft County residents.

"I'm going to miss the people, I'm going to miss the people I helped," said Harris. "I'm going to miss the people who worked for me and helped me. I'm not going to miss, probably, getting up at 3 a.m. and going on family disputes."

One challenge his replacement will face is the deteriorating county jail. Harris says the problem won't be solved until the county can build a new one.
