ISHPEMING -- Changes could be coming soon to the way the city of Ishpeming penalizes the owners of dangerous dogs. City Council is considering a new dog ordinance following several incidents where multiple pets and a young girl were harmed by dogs. Wednesday, the council heard a recommendation from a committee that identified what a dangerous dog is.
"There are a series of things that the dog can do to be considered dangerous, including menacing, chasing, displaying threatening or aggressive behavior toward or otherwise threatening or endangering the safety of a person or domestic animal, cause injury, aggressively bite," said Jared Ottenwess, Ishpeming City Manager.
Dogs identified as dangerous must attend a behavior training course. If the dog violates the ordinance three times after training within two years, it will be put down. The ordinance will be considered again at the next city council meeting.
