GLADSTONE -- The internal investigation into an incident involving a Michigan State Police Post commander in the Upper Peninsula is over.
Earlier this year, Lieutenant William Smith, commander of the Gladstone post, had been arrested by police in Sault Ste. Marie. He was charged with drunk driving. That case was later dismissed by a Chippewa County judge.
Smith had been suspended with pay during that period of time and through continued inquiry by the Michigan State Police.
According to the MSP Public Affairs Department, that investigation is now over. Smith has been transferred to the Lansing post and has been demoted to rank of Sergeant. In addition, he was suspended 15 days without pay.
