MARQUETTE -- If you're looking for something to do on Thursday night, the Peter White Public Library may have what you're looking for.

Northern Michigan University English professor and author, John Smolens, is reading excerpts from his newest novel, Quarantine. The book takes place during the late 1700s in Newburyport, Massachusetts, where Smolens once lived.

The plot of the novel has to do with a boat full of passengers coming down with a fever and then infecting the town.

"The idea for the story came from the fact that there were incidents where such fevers occurred in Newburyport, causing panic through the town, and they would have been quarantined, separating the sick from the ill," said Smolens.

This is Smolen's ninth novel. The book reading will be at 7 p.m. in the Shiras Room at Peter White Public Library.
