SAWYER -- Police are investigating a hit-and-run in West Branch Township that happened around 8 p.m. on Monday night.

The Michigan State Police said that 27-year-old Elizabeth Kohtala of Gwinn was hit by a 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by a 35-year-old Gwinn man. The incident happened in the parking lot of the Shoppette Store in Sawyer, according to police.

Authorities reported that the hit-and-run occurred after a disturbance in the parking lot, but Kohtala was an innocent bystander. She was taken to Marquette General Hospital, where she was treated for injuries and released.

Troopers said that they were able to identify and locate the driver after listening to witness statements. The man was arrested for operating while intoxicated, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, and driving on a suspended license. He was taken to the Marquette County Jail where he awaits arraignment.
