As a high pressure system sits over the Midwest, the weekend should should be relatively calm weatherwise, but as winds take a northwesterly turn throughout the day Saturday, lake effect snow is a possiblility. Snow again becomes likely later in the week as Hurricane Sandy makes landfall.

As of Saturday morning there have already been a few reports of light snow in the northern U.P. Any snowfall should be very light and may mix with rain in the peak heat of the afternoon. Saturday's highs will be chilly in the upper 30s to low 40s. Skies will be mostly sunny to partly cloudy. Strongest cloud cover is likely near Lake Superior.

Saturday night will be cold with all lows falling below freezing into the 20s and colder in the western interior. A few spots along the lakes will be less cool and may stay above freezing. Skies should still see a fair amount of clouds, mainly east where a chance for some flurries remains in the forecast.

Sunday may be a couple degrees warmer with highs in the low 40s. Skies should see a mix of sun and clouds with an end to any snowfall. Winds will be out of the north.

Sunday night's lows will again be chilly with most lows below freezing. Winds will be light and skies will be mostly clear.

On Monday, things warm up just a tad, but temperatures should still be below average. Things get interesting on Monday night as Hurricane Sandy edges closer to the midwest.

Hurricane Sandy is a Category 1 hurricane as of early Saturday. She will likely barrel down on the northeast by Monday, right in time for Halloween on Wednesday. Sandy's outer bands on her western side will likely impact the eastern U.P. by Monday night. Snow is becoming more likely, especially on Tuesday and Wednesday, with a strong northerly wind and plenty of moisture.

I'll have your most updated forecast on the Late News, and I'll post about our snow potential on Facebook. Be sure to send in any snow reports from your area!
