MARQUETTE (AP) -- Police in Michigan say they're stepping up patrols aimed at stopping drunken drivers during the week leading up to Halloween.

The Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning says more than 60 agencies in 15 counties will be conducting extra patrols starting Thursday and ending Oct. 31.

The patrols are supported by federal traffic safety funds.

Agencies participating in the effort are in Allegan, Calhoun, Berrien, Chippewa, Genesee, Ingham, Jackson, Kent, Macomb, Marquette, Monroe, Ottawa, St. Clair, Washtenaw and Wayne counties.

Last year, officers reported arresting 261 drunken drivers the weekend before Halloween.
