ISHPEMING -- Ishpeming High School athletics may be in line for a big grant thanks to Powerade and Sports Illustrated.
Eric Dompierre is an Ishpeming teen with Down Syndrome, who fought and won a battle with the Michigan High School Athletic Association to play sports his senior year at the age of 19.
Eric and his family fought for a waiver from the MHSAA to play sports past the age of 18. Eric's story is the subject of a short documentary on the Sports Illustrated website.
He's one of 10 underdog stories that you can vote on. The winning story's high school will receive a $25,000 grant for athletics.
"Eric is the success he is today because of the players and coaches that he's been working with over the last several years and my wife, Jill, and I would really think it would be great if those people would be rewarded in some way for being as accepting and supportive as they have been over these years," said Eric's dad, Dean Dompierre.
In addition to the grant, 10 members of Eric's team will also win a trip to the Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year Awards in New York City.
