MUNISING -- They're riding the wave of a controversial topic, and soon, it could come to a crashing halt.

People in Munising are at a standstill over the use of personal watercraft, or Jetskis, and whether or not they should be allowed along the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

"There are a number of people who would like to be able to use their personal watercraft in the park and believe that's a legitimate recreational activity. There are a number of other people who are very opposed to the use of personal watercraft, so this is democracy at work," said Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Superintendent, Jim Northup.

Seven years ago, the National Parks Service decided to allow personal watercrafts in a specific area of the lake. After being sued over the decision, the court ruled that the park takes another look at the issue.

The first of three public meetings will be held Tuesday night, all to get input on the hot topic.

"We want to listen to the public, whether they're for the use of personal watercraft or against the use of personal watercraft. Our job, at this point, is to listen to what those issues and concerns are so that we can make sure we do a really good job with this new environmental analysis," Northup added.
