BARAGA -- On Friday Baraga residents walked in memory of Chelsey LaFernier.

LaFernier was a victim of domestic violence and lost her life four years ago.

This is the fourth year of the annual walk and it's put on by the Office of Violence Against Women and the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community.

“The rationale for that is to just make people aware that this does happen. This happens in every community and the purpose is to try to prevent this from occurring and bring programs out and make the programs available to people so that they know that they have a way out," said Cherie Dakota, Office of Violence against Women team lead.

With supporters dressed in purple, they released balloons in honor of LaFernier right after the walk.

The Office of Violence Against Women says a brand new transition house for victims of domestic violence will open next month.
