NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP -- The TV6 Canathon is just over a month away, but the Michigan State Police are looking to get a head start on community service.

Every year the state holds a Michigan Harvest Gathering where residents are encouraged to drop off canned food items to be delivered to local charities.

Here in the Upper Peninsula, the Michigan State Police Negaunee Post collects items that will be donated to the TV6 Canathon. Essentially, this means all donations stay within the U.P.

"We have an open area, front door entrance, that will be able to place cans so that people can put their canned goods in there for other people who need them," said Trooper Stacey Rasanen of the Michigan State Police.

The Negaunee post will be collecting canned goods from October 8 to October 15. The TV6 Canathon officially kicks off in November.
