MARQUETTE -- Wednesday is National Walk to School Day, and students from Bothwell Middle School made the trek to their south Marquette school.
Groups, led by teachers and staff, started walking from Harlow Park, the old orphanage, and Hurley Field. Around 150 students participated in the walk to school event. The activity is part of the school's Safe Routes to School grant that is sponsored by the Michigan Department of Transportation.
"A lot of studies have been done; the more activity the students have, the better they learn, the better it is for them," said Assistant Principal Dan Gannon. "There's a big push for healthier lifestyles for all students, especially in the schools."
Gannon says walking to school as a large group also encourages camaraderie among the students. At the end of Wednesday morning's journey, walkers refueled with free snacks and water before starting their school day.
