HOUGHTON -- One in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Organizers and supporters of the Barbara Kettle Gundlach Shelter held a candlelight vigil to honor victims of domestic violence and celebrate survivors.

"We have a ceremony," said shelter director Emily Newhouse. "Part of it is we light a candle for those who can't be with us tonight, who maybe have died at the hands of their abuser from physical or emotional abuse or debilitated somehow from that or those who have just been told they couldn't come or threatened to come, and so we bring them into our ceremony by lighting a candle."

They also offered music and read poems written by women who were abused.  The next event will be on October 10, and for more information you can check out the shelter's website here.
