MARQUETTE -- The new United States Attorney for the western district of Michigan is touring the Upper Peninsula this week.

Patrick Miles Jr. took office in July. The Grand Rapids native is the first African American to hold his post. He represents 49 Michigan counties, including the entire Upper Peninsula.

In his trek above the bridge since being appointed, "miles" has been meeting with local law enforcement and Native American tribes, hearing their issues and concerns.

"I want to continue that cooperation and collaboration," said Miles. "I want the office to focus on more proactive case development, getting down to the local level with law enforcement, community groups."

Education, outreach, and deterrence are also areas Miles wants to expand through his position. The 44 year old began his legal career in 1991 as an associate at a Grand Rapids law firm. He plans to visit the U.P. at least once a year.
