MARQUETTE -- On Friday the United States Olympic Education Center will be holding a weightlifting competition at the Superior Dome in Marquette.

They're calling it the Upper Peninsula Weightlifting Championships. The event is an intra-squad meet for the weightlifting team, but it invites any member of USA Weightlifting to compete.

About 20 people are competing so far, including some high school students. The coaches are organizing this meet mainly as a tune up in preparation for the American Open national competition on November 30.

"Some of the athletes are going to be qualifying for that event, and some...this will be their first weightlifting meet ever, so we're showing them the ropes," said head weightlifting coach Vance Newgard.

Officials say the meet is free and spectator friendly.
